It is commonly known as ambarella in Sri Lanka and June plum. Ambarella is a plant that can be eaten as raw or ripe, a fruit and a vegetable. This is a very beneficial medicinal plant. Ambarella is slightly sour.
Ambarella fruit, leaf, tree bark and tree glue are also used in indigenous ayurvedic for making medicines. The juice in the leaves of the Ambarella tree is used to make medicinal remedies. This fast-growing tree can reach up to 20 m (averages 10–12 m). The tree produces small, inconspicuous white flowers in terminal panicles. Its oval fruits, 6–9 cm long, are borne in bunches of 12 or more on a long stalk. It is planted also in Panama, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela and the United States.
